Lewisville History

The history of Lewisville dates back to the 1840s when the Republic of Texas gave a grant to the Texas Emigration and Land Company that would allow 600 families to settle in present-day Denton County. By 1846, the settling families had arrived, and Denton County was founded. An incorporation election was held in 1925, which established Lewisville as an official city. At this time, the city’s population was 850 people.
The City of Lewisville continued to thrive, and by 1950, the population had grown to 1,500 people. In 1960, the Lewisville Lake Dam was constructed and U.S. 77, which is now IH-35E, was moved further west to serve as the main route between Dallas and Denton. In the 1970s and 1980s, the population of Lewisville rapidly increased and the city began to flourish.
By the 1990s, Lewisville’s population was 46,500 people, and the city had grown in residential and employment sectors as well. Today, the population of Lewisville is approximately 100,000 people, and the city is a major thriving community in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Historic Sites in Lewisville

Located in front of Lewisville City Hall, The Old Well House was built circa 1927. The building was owned by W.W. Sherrill, the owner of the water company, and included a water well, a water tank, and a water distribution system. The building was remodeled in 1996.
Built in 1885, The Greater Lewisville Community Theatre is located in Old Town Lewisville. As the oldest standing building in Lewisville, it underwent renovations from 2003 to 2006 and is still used today.
The original structure of Tierney’s Café and Tavern was constructed in 1885 as a Victorian-style home for Dr. Kennedy. According to local legends, Dr. Kennedy was the doctor of famous duo Bonnie and Clyde. The current owner remodeled the home in its entirety and had it re-opened and renamed as Tierney’s Café and Tavern.

Lewisville Today

With its rich Texas heritage, Lewisville continues to grow. According to local census records, the rapidly growing and diverse population of Lewisville includes an abundance of multi-generational families. In addition to its strong family values, Lewisville is a major employment center and visitor destination in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Today, the City of Lewisville eagerly supports protecting the environment as well as enjoying the outdoors with family and friends. Lewisville features over 2,000 acres of public parks as well as approximately 2,000 acres of urban wilderness located at the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area.
