The Lewisville area boasts a huge array of places you can go with the kids if you’re looking to spend a fun day together. Still, if you don’t know where to look, planning a family day that will keep everyone entertained can feel like a challenge. Whether you’re looking for fun by the water, historical walks, or anything in between, you’ll find plenty of places to go.

Not sure where to start? Huffines CJDR Lewisville has you covered. We put together this list of spots in and around Lewisville that your family is sure to love.

Lewisville Lake

If you’re looking for outdoor fun with the kiddos in tow, you can’t go wrong with a day at Lewisville Lake. The huge local lake stretches 29,000 acres with an average depth of 25 feet, offering 233 miles of shoreline and plenty of water to enjoy. Nine thousand acres of protected nature surround the lake, too. In other words, no matter how you define fun in the great outdoors, you’ll likely find what you’re looking for when you visit Lewisville Lake.

Whether you’re looking for a scenic place to hike or bike, or a great place for boating or water sports, Lewisville Lake has something for you. The lake is a great spot for a family to spend the day fishing — it’s even known as the “Urban Bass Fishing Capital of Texas”! In addition to largemouth bass, white bass, and hybrid white/striped bass, you’ll have the chance to reel in crappie and catfish here. Of course, you can also easily spend the day sailing, swimming, Jet Skiing, or picnicking, so it’s no wonder Lewisville Lake is a popular spot for locals to enjoy.

Lewisville Lake Park, managed by the city of Lewisville, makes the perfect place to start exploring with your family. This 622-acre park sits on the lake’s south shore and is super easy to reach from Interstate 35 east. Lake Park opens at 7 a.m. every day and closes at 9 p.m. between March and September or 5 p.m. from October through February. Entrance costs $10 per car, so make the short drive over and treat your family to a fun-filled day by the water.

Hawaiian Falls The Colony

In the mood for even more family fun by the water after a trip to Lewisville Lake? You’ll want to have Hawaiian Falls The Colony at the top of your list of places to check out. It is part of the Hawaiian Falls Waterparks chain, a small Texas chain with five locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and Central Texas areas. Hawaiian Falls The Colony is the closest northern-Texas location and is incredibly easy to get to from Lewisville.

Look forward to water adventures thanks to slides, wave pools, lazy rivers, and more. Whether your kids are looking for big thrills on body slides, or if they prefer something more low-key like inner tubing, there’s something for everyone at this nearby water park. Activities such as dance contests, limbo, and conga lines take a day at Hawaiian Falls to the next level.

Kids won’t want to miss the huge interactive water fortress, which comes complete with slides, fountains, climbing nets, and more. Complete the trip by treating the whole family to a classic Hawaiian shave ice, a refreshing treat that comes in flavors like cherry, coconut, and blue raspberry. You don’t need to jet off to Hawaii to enjoy a real tropical outing thanks to this local spot. You can buy tickets for daily admission or go for a season pass if you want unlimited visits during the summer.

Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary

Head over to nearby McKinney when you want to spend some family time reconnecting with nature. That’s where you’ll find the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary, an amazing place dedicated to bringing people and nature together since 1967. The 289-acre nature preserve and museum hosts a range of events and educational opportunities in a threefold mission of education, conservation, and preservation.

With a particular focus on education for young people, the Heard offers the perfect place to visit when you want to learn more about the natural world with your kids. From a ropes course to birding and scouting activities, garden talks to zip line days and more, there’s something every member of the family will appreciate at the Heard.

The Heard is typically open on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. On the second Saturday of the month, you can visit as early as 7:30 a.m. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $7 for children ages 3 and older as well as seniors. Kids 2 years old and under can get in for free.

McKinney’s Historic Downtown

You won’t want to miss out on a visit to McKinney’s Historic Downtown while you’re in the area. This charming area is great for a stroll around town, and it features a range of unique activities perfectly suited to family time with the kids.

First on your list of things to check out? McKinney’s frogs! You read that right: Sprinkled around downtown McKinney are a range of fun and friendly frogs (well, statues of frogs) that add even more quirky charm to the area. Kids will love searching for hidden amphibians while you do some shopping or look for the perfect place to grab a delicious bite to eat.

Historic Downtown McKinney also offers geocaching opportunities. This free, outdoor treasure-hunt activity lets you search for hidden containers, known as geocaches, by using a GPS or smartphone. Geocaching is a great way to get the kids excited about exploring, and McKinney’s Stormwater Maintenance Department put together a great program. So, while you’re checking out the historic buildings and otherwise enjoying the atmosphere in this downtown area, you can rest assured the kids will stay engaged and entertained.

There you have it. Huffines CJDR Lewisville just gave you some suggestions about how to spend your next family day out and about. No matter what activities interest your kids, you can easily find the ideal way to spend some quality time together, all without traveling far at all.
