Lewisville, Texas has around 100,000 residents and was formally incorporated in 1925. The city has bowling alleys, major festivals, concerts, stage plays, fine art displays, shopping, dining, and family-friendly attractions. There are also wonderful outdoor activities in the city and the surrounding area.
1. Visiting Lake Park
Lake Park has a golf course, athletic facilities, a marina, and day-use areas over its 662 acres. There’s also the Tom “Old Man” McCutcheon Disk Golf Course, an RV campground, a fishing barge, and pavilions which are available for rent. Near the lake, people can camp, picnic, use the boat ramps, and spend time on the beaches or docks.
The park is open year-round and is a wonderful place to see a wide variety of birds. People have seen different types of sparrows, cardinals, blackbirds, finches, swans, loons, pelicans, falcons, ibises, hawks, eagles, doves, owls, hummingbirds, vireos, wood-warblers, and herons in the park.
2. Hiking or Biking on the Trails
There are several trails in and around Lewisville which are available for public use and perfect for hiking or biking. There are about twenty different trails that can be found throughout the city and that can serve as a great way to get from one place to the next while spending time in nature.
3. Visiting the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area
The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area, or LLELA, preserves and restores native Texas biodiversity and ecosystems. People can go camping, go fishing, follow the Geocache Trail, go canoeing or kayaking, go hiking or biking, and have a picnic at the LLELA. LLELA also offers several activities and programs like bird walks with expert birders, group hikes, and visits to the historic Minor-Porter Log House. This includes tours of the smoke house and the dugout in addition to the log home.
LLELA is also a place of research and restoration. LLELA has been working on restoring the prairie as the bluestem grasses, sideoats grama, indiangrass, and buffalo grass which once dominated the North Texas prairies have become rare. LLELA also works on restoring the forest, managing the wetland, reintroducing lost wildlife species to the area, and controlling invasive plant species like the Cirsium vulgare and the Triadica sebifera.
4. Spending Time on Lake Lewisville
Lake Lewisville spans 29,000 acres and has 233 miles of shoreline, making it one of the largest lakes in north Texas. The lake is great for swimming, fishing, paddle boarding, boating, jet skiing, and sailing.
For those who enjoy partying, party barges can be rented, and many people spend time at Party Cove which is near Westlake Park. Drink responsibly and with moderation. People consuming alcohol must be of legal drinking age and should not drink and drive.
