If you’re looking for a pickup truck that can transport extremely heavy loads, the 2022 Ram 3500 is the perfect choice for you. This heavy-duty, full-size truck is an incredible workhorse that can handle any job you throw at it, from hauling construction materials to towing a large trailer. Although it’s a hulking vehicle, it provides you with a refined and comfortable ride. Let’s find out more about the performance and towing capabilities of the Ram 3500.

Engine Specifications

The 2022 Ram 3500 has three engine options to suit your needs and preferences. The base engine is a 6.4-liter V-8 that generates 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque and works with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This combination is the only one that’s available in the mid-range Power Wagon trim, which is exclusively equipped with four-wheel drive.

Every other Ram 3500 model offers an optional engine in a 6.7-liter turbo-diesel inline-six and rear- or four-wheel drive. There are the following two versions of this diesel power plant: the standard version, which produces 370 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque, and the high-output unit, which serves 400 hp and a best-in-class 1,075 lb-ft of torque. Both engines have a six-speed automatic transmission specifically designed for heavy-duty use.

Performance

Even with its base engine, the Ram 3500 easily handles most driving tasks without issue: from cruising around town to overtaking on the highway. It provides relatively brisk acceleration and ample power for transporting hefty loads. However, if you’re planning to do heavy-duty towing and hauling, you should select a model that uses one of the two diesel engines. With the high-output diesel powertrain under its hood, the Ram 3500 has a tow rating that’s comparable to those of some semi-trucks.

Despite being a large truck, the Ram 3500 can perform well away from the pavement. With the available all-wheel drive and limited-slip differential, it can maintain good traction on most types of terrain. It also has plenty of horsepower and torque, so it can easily drive through mud, sand, and off-road obstacles. Additionally, it has a robust suspension that can withstand lots of abuse.

Towing Capacity

The maximum towing capacity of the 2022 Ram 3500 varies depending on your choice of engine. However, all three engines give the truck outstanding work capabilities. If you select the V-8 engine, you’ll be able to tow up to 18,210 lbs, which is enough for most jobs or outdoor activities. Furthermore, models that come with the base engine can haul up to 7,680 lbs, which is the maximum payload capacity of the Ram 3500.

The standard turbo-diesel engine enables the Ram 3500 to pull up to 22,670 lbs and haul up to 6,840 lbs. If you need even more towing power, you can choose the high-output diesel engine to achieve the truck’s maximum towing capacity of 37,090 lbs, which is the highest in the heavy-duty truck segment. With this kind of capacity at your disposal, you can transport anything: from a large sailboat to a fully loaded fifth-wheel trailer. This power plant delivers a payload rating of 6,570 lbs.

Handling

Due to their hefty size and weight, heavy-duty, full-size trucks tend to be cumbersome to drive. However, the Ram 3500 is an exception. Its handling and turning dynamics are surprisingly good for such a large vehicle. It has an accurate and responsive steering system that features a recirculating ball mechanism and hydraulic power assistance, making it a cinch to maneuver.

If you’re planning to use your new truck for commuting or transporting cargo in the city, you won’t be disappointed with the Ram 3500. It can easily navigate through congested traffic and other tight areas and provides a comfortable ride over uneven surfaces. If you frequently drive in an urban area, you’d be better off choosing a model with the base V-8 engine, which delivers a fine and uncommon fine-tuned refinement in heavy-duty trucks. Overall, this Ram is arguably the smoothest-riding model in its segment.

When it’s time to hit the open road, you can expect nothing short of a great driving experience from the Ram 3500. Thanks to its powerful engine, the truck shows no signs of struggling, even when you give it demanding tasks, such as climbing steep mountain roads or lugging a large camper. It also gets up to speed quickly enough to merge onto the highway and overtake other vehicles. Furthermore, this Ram truck has excellent body control that allows it to remain steady on bendy roads and sturdy brakes that inspire confidence.

Trim Levels and Prices

The 2022 Ram 3500 comes in five trims: the entry-level Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Limited Longhorn, and the top-of-the-line Limited. If you’re going to be using your Ram truck mainly for work purposes, it’s a good idea to get the Tradesman. This model has a base manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $44,520 and offers basic comfort, convenience, and technology features.

If you want a nicer and better-equipped truck, you should opt for the Big Horn. Starting at $48,740, this trim looks more stylish and comes with remote keyless entry and a feature-rich Uconnect 5 infotainment system. Choosing the popular Laramie will cost you at least $60,135. Still, the extra money gets you a plusher cabin and additional features, such as dual-zone automatic climate control, 10-way power front seats with heating, a nine-speaker Alpine audio system, and parking sensors.

The Ram 3500 begins to enter a luxury territory with the Limited Longhorn. For $67,710 or more, you’ll get a more stately-looking truck with chrome trim and an upscale cabin with genuine leather upholstery and real wood accents. With a base price of $72,275, the Limited is one of the most luxurious heavy-duty trucks on the market. It features 20-inch alloy wheels, power running boards, aluminum interior accents, premium upholstery, and a 12-inch touch-screen display.
