Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles combine the power from an internal combustion engine with an electric motor. Gasoline fuels the engine while a battery pack delivers energy to the electric motor.

Jeep opted for a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder twin-turbocharged engine in the Grand Cherokee 4xe. This engine uses a low-inertia twin-scrolling turbocharger that spins up more quickly and uses less energy than a larger single-scroll turbocharger. Adding a power steering system and an air conditioning unit operated by electricity removes these traditional loads from the gas engine, improving efficiency.

This engine partners with a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission and an electric motor that replaces the torque converter. Jeep engineers used a clutch system to regulate power from the engine and electric motor to the transmission, enabling multiple drive modes. You can run gas-only, electric-only, or a combination of both.

You can select E-Save mode and use only the 2.0-liter engine, saving your electricity for later. Choosing Electric mode shuts down the gasoline engine. You’ll save money and produce nearly zero emissions when you rely on the electric motor only to drive your Grand Cherokee 4xe. Lastly, you have the hybrid mode, which engages both systems for maximum power and instantaneous torque.

A 400-volt, 17-kWh lithium-ion battery pack powers the electric motor. Jeep mounted the battery and control units beneath the floor and installed heavy-duty skid plates to protect them from damage. Reliable heating and cooling circuits keep your battery at the correct operating temperature for optimal performance.

Performance Statistics

The Grand Cherokee 4xe uses gas and electricity to produce 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. As a result, the 4xe tows up to 6,000 pounds when equipped adequately while achieving a 56 MPGe rating.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe can travel up to 25 miles using only electrical power. Since most Americans commute less than 40 miles round-trip, you can save on fuel. In addition, more companies have installed charging stations for employees to use, in many cases at no cost. If your company has a charging station, you can recharge while you work and never have to stop for gas during your commute. In addition, the 4xe boasts a combined total driving range of 470 miles.

In addition, installing the Jeep Level II home charging station recharges your battery six times faster than level I charging stations due to the DC to DC charging. Furthermore, you get built-in Wi-Fi connectivity when you purchase a home charging station. Using Wi-Fi, you can control your charging from anywhere with your cellphone. You also can schedule your charging for off-peak times at lower rates, saving you even more money.

4xe Trim Levels and Pricing

Jeep offers the Grand Cherokee in five trim levels. The base model 4xe comes nicely equipped with heated front and second-row seats and a heated steering wheel. You also get Capri leather-trimmed upholstery and a nine-speaker premium audio system with noise cancellation technology. In addition, your 4xe comes with a suite of driver-assist systems. This class-exclusive feature lets your front wheels drop and compress for increased articulation while traversing challenging terrain. Quadra-Drive II comes standard with the Trailhawk 4xe, which transfers up to 100% power to the axle with the most traction. The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe has an MSRP of $62,880.

Jeep’s Overland 4xe model adds the Quadra-Lift air suspension system enabling up to 10.3 inches of ground clearance to assist you with water fording and climbing over obstacles. In addition, this system improves on-road comfort by automatically adjusting dampers to smooth out imperfections in the road.

Jeep equips the Overland 4xe with 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels in various styles, plus a dual-pane panoramic sunroof to let in all the light and air on your next adventure. An MSRP of $66,155 makes the Overland 4xe one of the most affordable 4×4 PHEVs ever built.

The Summit Reserve 4xe trim comes with quilted Palermo leather seats and a 19-speaker McIntosh audio system that delivers theater-quality sound while you stay cradled in comfort. Even your front passengers get their interactive display screen as part of this technologically advanced vehicle. Jeep starts the Summit Reserve 4xe at MSRP $74,695 before option packages.

If you choose the Summit 4xe, you’ve attained the pinnacle of performance and style. A two-tone color pallet adds a black roof and stylish 21-inch aluminum-alloy wheels that stand out in the crowd. In addition, you’ll enjoy the added driver-assist systems like Intersection Collision Assist and Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist.

The driver’s seat features a massage function and adjusts up to 16 ways for precise comfort. A massive 10.1-inch touch-screen comes with Tom-Tom Navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth technology built-in.
